Genio de la magia con más de 20 años de carrera a sus espaldas, uno de los ilusionistas más reconocidos no solo de nuestro país sino del mundo, ganador del Premio a Mejor Mago de Escena otorgado por la Academia de las Artes Mágicas de Hollywood y que tras dos años de intenso trabajo a pesar de incluso roturas de hueso en su cuerpo, nos presenta ‘Flipar’.
Hoy por primera vez visita hablo de magia en este Patio de Butacas y tengo el gran honor de que además sea junto a uno de los más grandes, con una persona que se dedica a hacernos a los demás a creer en cosas que ni pensábamos que sería posible. ¿Cómo estás?
Muy bien, la verdad. Deseando llegar a Barcelona y presentar ‘Flipar’ que es el título del show que vamos a hacer porque además hace ya cinco años que no volvía a Barcelona en temporada. Hay un montón de novedades y de magia inédita que vamos a compartir con todos los espectadores que vengan al Poliorama.
Vas a estar en el Teatro Poliorama del 28 de noviembre al 22 de diciembre. Dentro de la sorpresa, ¿puedes contarnos un poco de lo que vamos a poder ver en este nuevo trabajo?
¡Sí! Este show va alrededor de cómo es mi visión de la magia en el siglo XXI, que es una magia muy interactiva y muy novedosa también porque en este espectáculo hay ilusiones originales que hemos tardado tres y cuatro años en crear. Hemos trabajado en efectos para todos los públicos que les va a dejar con la boca abierta y por eso se llama ‘Flipar’. De hecho el título se lo pusieron los espectadores porque cuando yo colgaba un video en redes todo el mundo decía: «Acabo de flipar!», «He flipado» y me di cuenta que ese término define muy la emoción mágica y lo que se siente al ver un juego de magia.
En este show hacemos a doce espectadores del público invisibles en cada función y es un momentazo del show que la gente recuerda. Hay un número que hago con todos los teléfonos móviles de todos los espectadores que están sentados en sus butacas y sucede algo que no se puede entender y que también recuerdan. Es muy sorprendente.
¿Qué mas? Hay un truco por ejemplo con dos mil piezas Lego en el escenario. Hay números muy artísticos, muy creativos y también interactivos porque yo creo que cada vez la magia es más interactiva y el espectador cada vez quiere participar más.
Hablas de la cara que se nos queda a los espectadores cuando vemos como nos dejas con tus números, pero ¿qué sientes en momentos así cuando nos ves a nosotros flipar con lo que consigues?
La misma emoción o más al ver las caras de los espectadores y como abren los ojos y la alegría que les produce porque la magia al final es una sensación de alegría, de ver algo que no puede ser y que te conecta con tu infancia. Son unas sensaciones muy fuertes las que se viven y de hecho es transgeneracional, hay niños que están con las mismas caras que sus padres y personas de muy diversas edades en las a todos se les ve ese impacto de la magia. De hecho, nos gusta decir que es el show donde los niños descubren que sus padres no lo saben todo.
Aunque no es un show para niños porque hay gente que se confunde y piensa que la magia es para niños y eso no es verdad, la disfrutan ellos pero en realidad está creada para la mente del adulto. Para nosotros los niños son el público más difícil porque no atiende a la lógica y es mucho más disperso, no sabes a dónde van a mirar ni qué van a decir. A veces suben niños al escenario y hay que tener un extra de atención y estar completamente alerta.
Yo de pequeña disfrutaba mucho de la magia, de hecho recuerdo mucho que mi padre que me ponía siempre a Tamariz y luego de mayor he seguido viendo a compañeros tuyos, pero tengo que reconocerte que soy de esas personas a las que le gusta la magia pero que se enfada cuando me quedo con la cara de tonta al no entender cómo habéis hecho algo… ¿A ti esto también te pasa con tus compañeros? ¿Has visto trucos que hasta no has sabido desgranar no has parado o al contrario, hay juegos que prefieres no conocerlos?
(Ríe) No, de hecho cuando hay un compañero que hace algo impresionante y que no sé cómo lo ha hecho, si yo no voy a hacer ese efecto me encanta no saberlo. Creo que hay que entender que esto es un juego con el espectador y no es un reto.
Yo voy a hacer algo que te fascina y eso tiene una técnica, un principio físico, científico y psicológico. Es como si vas a ver una peli y estás pendiente de lo que es real o no, pues en el caso de la magia es igual. Es verdad que con la magia se produce un impacto en la realidad y ocurren cosas que aparentemente son imposibles y las estás viendo en directo y no a través de una pantalla sino con personas de carne y hueso. Entonces ahí entiendo que el caballo de la lógica que todos tenemos quiera saberlo, pero en el fondo no lo quieres saber, de verdad.
En internet hay videos en los que tú puedes ver el juego y muy cerquita está la explicación, y justamente eso apenas tiene visitas porque a la gente le gusta ver lo que es extraordinario y el Making of en magia no es interesante. A veces nos gustaría contarlo por lo ingenioso que es y porque la explicación es mejor que el efecto y de esto yo me di cuenta de niño cuando aprendía juegos y luego, cuando se los explicaba a mi hermano veía su cara de decepción, y fue cuando entendí que la segunda parte es mejor no contarla, que lo que se crea viendo magia es maravilloso y no merece la pena desvelar el secreto. Y no por egoísmo si no por la fascinación que vive el espectador.
Y tú, Jorge, ¿cuando empezaste a prestarle atención a querer saber cómo se hacían esos trucos?
(Ríe). Tendría que ser por el año 86, yo tendría seis años y por cronología debería ser por un programa de Tamariz que se llamaba ‘Magia potagia’ y ahí recuerdo ver un truco de un mago que se llamaba Arturo Ascanaio y que era un invitado en el programa pero que no era mago profesional, sino que era abogado. Él hizo un juego con una carta que rompía y que luego recomponía… Tengo esa imagen grabada como la primera vez de ver a un mago.
Y luego yo cogí la baraja que tenía mi padre en casa y rompí todas las cartas, me acabé cargando la baraja entera con la bronca consecuente de después. Pero es que estaba tan impactado con lo que había visto que lo intenté repetir en casa aunque no me salió. Luego tuve alguna caja de magia pero no me enganchó mucho y cuando tenía 12 años apareció en los kioskos unos fascículos coleccionables semanales que se llamaban ‘El mundo mágico de Tamariz’. Fueron 70 entregas y durante más de un año los coleccioné todos y eso fue lo que me enganchó. Los leía como mi regalo máximo y luego iba a la tienda con mi madre a comprar los libros que recomendaban ahí.
También estaba ‘La escuela de Tamariz’ y Tamariz es el responsable de que me dedique a esto y no solo yo, sino un montón de magos como Piedrahita, Jandro… Todos empezamos en el año 92 con esos fascículos.
Desde mi ignorancia me gustaría hacerte una pregunta ¿Qué diferencia hay entre mago e ilusionista? ¿O es el mismo término?
Es el mismo término pero creo que más correcto es el de ilusionista. «Mago» es también de los esoterismos o en Canarias por ejemplo mago es el hombre que trabaja en el campo. «Mago» tiene muchas acepciones, pero «ilusionista» es mucho más clara y además es más bonita.
Decías que de pequeño veías a Tamariz y fue por quien te dedicaste a esto, ahora tienes incluso relación con él y yo en la presentación decía que has sido el primer español en recibir el Premio a Mejor Mago de Escena, que creo que es como el Oscar de la Magia y lo otorga la Academia de las Artes Mágicas de Hollywood…
Ha sido una maravilla. Además la Academia de las Artes Escénicas de Hollywood tiene la sede en The Magic Castle, un lugar mítico en Los Ángeles y en donde cada año desde hace más de 60 se hace esta ceremonia y en donde entregan premios en distintas disciplinas. Y era la primera vez que le daban un premio de magia de escena a alguien de fuera de Estados Unidos, y la verdad que se ha abierto la veda a que premien a alguien de España en una disciplina en la que no es habitual que salga de Estados Unidos.
Y muy feliz porque estuve allí el 17 de mayo, di un discurso y luego actué en un teatro de 1600 butacas, el United Artists, creado por Charles Chaplin y Mary Pickford en los años 20 para proyectar películas y luchar contra las grandes cinematográficas de la época. Fue de película.
Siempre he tenido buen vínculo con Estados Unidos, hace cinco años me llamó David Copperfield para preguntarme por una de mis ideas y comprar los derechos para poder hacerlo en su show de Las Vegas y desde entonces tengo buena relación y voy habitualmente a trabajar allí. Una vez al año más o menos. Pero este premio me va a animar mucho más aunque yo donde más disfruto es aquí, en Madrid, Barcelona y haciendo gira.
Antes de despedirnos me gustaría que viéramos tu camino recorrido e hiciéramos un repaso desde que le hacías trucos de magia a tu hermano o comprabas los fascículos con tu madre, a la actualidad, en donde estrenas ‘Flipar’, te llama David Copperfield o tienes contacto cercano con tu referente Tamariz… Tú ahora ese camino. ¿Cómo me lo resumirías o con qué te quedarías?
Ahora le diría a mi yo pequeño que va a flipar (reímos). Que no se imagina lo que va a pasar pero que al final lo mejor de todo es lo que compartes con las personas. Es verdad que al final han habido muchos éxitos y ojalá que sigan viniendo, pero hay que ser honesto con lo que haces, con lo que presentas en el escenario porque al final el público es muy listo y sabe cuándo es real o estás copiando a otros, o cuándo tienes compinches en las butacas que son actores y se suben al escenario…. Y esas son cosas que te sacan del pacto que tienes con el ellos. Nosotros «engañamos» porque les proponemos un engaño que es muy artístico y es muy ingenioso y si ese pacto se rompe, es una pena y artísticamente tienen muy poco valor. Por eso creo que eso es lo que más felicidad me da, estar orgulloso del material, de lo que vas creando y que el público lo reconozca.
Afortunadamente los teatro están respondiendo muy bien de público y tanto mi equipo como yo seguimos trabajando en lo que nos apasiona. Así que felicidad máxima.
De hecho te apasiona tanto que en los ensayos estabas con el fémur roto…
(Ríe). Sí, sí. Me rompí el fémur al empezar a ensayar el show pero ya estamos al 100%. Hemos hecho 150 funciones y para mi ahora el espectáculo está en su mejor momento. Y aunque a éste todavía le quedan un par de años de gira, pero mientras ya estamos creando nuevas ilusiones y ya preparando el siguiente, porque aquí no se para (ríe).
